I've been working on a site in the online dating niche, specifically about Mexican brides. It's based on Wordpress hosted on my own VPS. I launched the site in August of last year, 2010.

I created it based on keyword research I had been doing, poking around the "relationship" and "romance" topics. What I found was a couple of keyword phrases that looked reasonably good - decent search volume, without too much stiff competition.

I did what I would normally do for this type of project. I began by researching the topic and writing some original, high-quality articles on various related subjects. I launched the site, got it indexed, and began some basic link-building activities.

After about 5-6 weeks, I was able to achieve high Page 1 rankings on the main two keyword phrases. The site is monetized with pretty specific, well-targeted affiliate dating offers, specifically the Hispanic market.

Since the site was based around dating women or finding brides in Mexico, that's what all the content was about, with a few articles on general marriage and romance.

Well, I started getting good traffic, and clicks on the dating offers. Conversions were decent, and the site was earning good revenues.

About 3 months in, I stopped most of my backlinking activities. The site held stable with it's Page 1 rankings.

Then I noticed a drop-off in commissions from the affiliate offers. Upon closer inspection, I found the site had dropped off the map. A few weeks later it was back on Page 1. Then a few more weeks and it was gone again.

Since then, I've been fighting a battle trying to regain my good rankings. I've renewed my link-building, but have only seen sporadic improvements. The site would show back up on Page 1 for a few days, then disappear again.

At this time, I have no idea why it's having such trouble holding on to it's rankings. No clue. It's particularly annoying in that the sites that outrank it and have good positions aren't strong sites. Nor are they optimized either for "Mexican brides" or "Mexican mail order brides", the two main phrases I'm targeting.

Well, the only thing I can think of doing is sticking with my renewed link building efforts. Just yesterday, I saw it finally re-emerge, albeit at the bottom of Page 2.

Hopefully this is just an anomaly and I'll re-gain m my rankings, which at one time were in the top 3 positions.

What's the moral of the story? I don't know. If I get good positioning back, I'd have to say it is maintaining consistency in building backlinks, even once you achieve your desired position.

Depending on what your business model is, search engine traffic can be the life-blood of your business. If you are buying traffic, such as Pay-Per-Click, then you know pretty much exactly how much traffic you will get; the more you pay, the more you receive.

Natural, or organic traffic is a whole different situation. For those businesses that live off of search engine traffic, there are two factors that determine how many visitors you will get.

The first is the particular keyword phrase you are targeting, specifically how often it is searched. Obviously, you're never going to get 100 visitors per day for a keyword that only gets searched 10 times per day. On the other hand, you won't get 100 visitors even if it is searched that many times per day. Which brings us to the second factor determining your traffic volume.

Where you rank for your targeted phrase will determine what percentage of "available traffic" you get. Let's talk a minute about "available volume".

A given keyword phrase gets searched "x" times per day. How do you know what "x" is? You use one of the many available keyword research tools. Some of these tools require one-time or subscription payments, while some others are free. Two good free tools are Wordtracker (http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/), and Google's own keyword research tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal).

It's worth noting that you will often get different results for the same query with these tools. That is because they use different methods and different databases to determine search volume. Either way, you are seeing a rough estimate, but that's what we have to work with.

Suppose your target phrase gets searched 100 times each day. This is where your rank or position comes in. Depending on where you are in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Page), you are only going to see a percentage of that volume. The closer to the top, or Position #1 that your web page appears, the larger the fraction of total search volume you will get.

Generally speaking, the top spot, Position #1, gets approximately 50% of the volume. This means that when a search is done, about half of the people searching will click on the first result. Positions #2 and #3 split about another 25%, giving the first three entries approximately 75% of the available volume.

The remaining 7 entries on the first page will split nearly all the remaining 50%, with each position seeing a lesser percentage than the one above it. In all, if you aren't on the first page, you don't see very much of the trafic, and in fact if you aren't near the top, the fraction you receive will be very low.

The keys to natural search engine traffic then are targeting keyword phrases that have decent daily search volume, and to get your web page to rank at or near the top of the SERPs for that keyword phrase.

It goes without saying that the higher the daily search volume, the stiffer the competition is likely to be. And so, your goals should be to target phrases that have good search volume, but not so much that reaching the top spots will be nearly impossible.

In the ecommerce space, I have a new site about Night Vision equipment. I got into this site after searching to find an airsoft thermal scope. I couldn't find what I was looking for, but saw a site selling various night vision equipment, infrared goggles, and some cool spy gear, up for auction, so I jumped on it!

Similar in some ways though not entirely 'ecommerce', I have a new blog about wine, specifically about how to make homemade wine. Great site, great graphics, and great information about wine in general, and how to make it yourself.

The rest of my new projects are in the "informational" arena. Based on my own interest in building my own family tree and trying to find genealogical information that didn't charge for access, I now have a site offering free genealogy search capability and information. Great information about how to track down your own family tree!

Lastly, I started a few new blogs. One is aimed at helping women suffering from yeast infections find relief, specifically how to find and use an effective yeast infection home remedy. I know if works as the information came from my 'better half' who has suffered from this Candida fungus.

And, really lastly, are two other informational sites:

Biblical Prosperity - about how to gain prosperity using the Bible as a guide;
Stop Smoking Help - for those with that awful nicotine or tobacco habit.

It seems as though Internet marketing has shifted. Once upon a time, "Internet Marketing" meant "E-Commerce". But with the advent of Affiliate marketing, membership sites, and such, the basic online store has been relegated to 'has been' status.

I recently launched a new informational website in the life insurance niche. Specifically, it's intended to provide information about the differences of Term Life Insurance vs Whole Life Insurance for those looking for coverage. It's monetized through contextual advertising, but differently than I might have done so years back.

Back in the early days of Internet marketing, there were much fewer ways to make money online, however the general sophistication of marketers was considerably lower. I'm beginning with something of an experiment. Part of the experiment involves testing to see how long it takes to get a brand new site up, indexed, and ranking in the SERPS. I'm beginning the 'test' with five new domains and sites:

Homedics Back Massager
Pool Vacuum Cleaners
Gas Leaf Blowers
Portable Propane Heaters
Atomic Wall Clocks

Of these sites, there are two .com TLD's, two .org TLD's, and one .info TLD. I've gone through just the very basics of on-page SEO.

Off-page SEO - meaning back link building - has consisted of a very basic campaign. I've submitted the first page of each site to Digg, Blinklist, added it to StumbleUpon, and used Onlywire to tag them to about a dozen more social bookmarking sites.

In addition, each site has 1-3 articles submitted to article directories including Ezinearticles and Goarticles.

I'll be watching and tracking the progress, meaning how long it takes each web site to get indexed, where in the SERPS the initial ranking is, and how long it takes for the other backlinks to show up.

I'll post my results here as I get them.

High PR, Page Rank Links Aren't All They Seem

One of the ways to get high PR, or Page Rank backlinks that many of us are familiar with is blog commenting. Blogs that don’t use the “no-follow” tag can 'pass on' some of their Page Rank to their links when you comment on them. It is often taught as an “easy” way to get high-value backlinks for SEO purposes.

In fact, you can get software just for that purpose. For example, Comment Kahuna is very popular, and very good at finding high-PR blogs.

However, most blogs with high PR have that Pagerank on their main index or home page. Sub pages will generally have much lower pagerank.

When you post a comment on a blog, chances are your comments aren’t appearing on the home page where that post is. And even if it is, it will likely “roll off” the home page long before you get any of the pagerank benefit of that home page.

Commenting, or blog posting is a great for getting links, and is a central part of my own strategy. Also, the net value that’s passed on from a high-pr blog will always be higher than that of a lower pagerank blog.

That being said, the fact is that that when you comment on a post that’s on the home page of a PR4 blog for instance, you aren’t getting the same ‘value’ that you would for that same link on a static PR4 page, and in fact might not be getting much value at all.

Blog commenting should be used as one component of your linking & traffic strategy. Just be aware that you may not be getting as much value as you might have thought.

Taking Advantage of "Topical" Niches

We all know about the "usual" niches - things link "weight loss", "dating", etc. But there are zillions of 'topical' niches that can do as well as any top niche, usually with much less competition.

I have a number of niche blogs and sites, monetized with Adsense, to take advantage of traditional niches:

Nursing School Programs - nursing schools, jobs, careers.

Hypnosis-X.info - everything you wanted to know about hypnosis.

Complete Home School Guide - about homeschooling and homeschoolers.

Fix Credit Repair - fixing your credit rating, repairing your credit score.

My point is simply this: Don't limit your Internet Marketing efforts to traditional niches. There's a LOT of money to be made outside of the "usual suspects"!

But I've also begun exploring topical niches: news events, trends, etc.

What Is Search Engine Marketing?

"SEM", or Search engine marketing, is a type of marketing that focuses on generating a high ranking on the Internet search engine results pages ("SERPs") of the major search engines. Search engine marketing – also known simply as "search marketing" – includes search engine optimization (SEO) on the one hand, and various kinds of paid search engine marketing including "pay-per-click", "paid inclusion" and "paid placement" on the other.

A search engine is an information retrieval system designed to help users find information stored on the Internet. Essentially, search engines were built to help minimize the amount of time required to locate information. Nowadays, they are the main tool used by Internet users to find the information they want. Consequently, search engines are a major source of web traffic for many websites. Moreover, because search engine users tend not to look beyond the first few pages of results, the higher the ranking achieved by your website, the more search engine traffic it is likely to receive.

Search engine optimization is the process of increasing your search engine ranking for specific keywords. In other words, if you know that many of your prospective customers tend to search for your products and services using particular keywords, you want your site to be highly ranked in the SERPs for those keywords. In general, to achieve a high ranking, you need your website to be perceived by the search engines as being highly "relevant" for those keywords. Although the algorithms used by search engines are a carefully guarded secret, it is generally believed that this involves designing your website in a certain way, as well as attracting "back links" from other relevant ("authority") sites.

While achieving a high ranking in the SERPs via search engine optimization can take time and effort, it doesn't take much time to get a high ranking in the paid listings… if you're willing to pay! Essentially, you can have your site or ad appear high on the paid listings in return for a fee. Pay-per-click advertising, for example, is where the search engines display a short ad for your website on the right-hand side of the SERPs in return for a fee. The amount of this fee will depend on how popular are the keywords you're targeting. Fees can range from $0.05, to $5 to $50 per click!

Paid inclusion programs are programs where, in exchange for a fee, a search engine will guarantee the inclusion of your website listing. The downside of these programs is that they cannot guarantee that the pages will rank high for certain keyword searches. This is in contrast to paid placement programs, which do guarantee top listings if you pay a high enough fee. Paid placement can be particularly expensive. Both paid placement and paid inclusion typically involve a flat fee.

While there is a cost involved in either search engine optimization or paid search, both can be very cost effective compared to other means of advertising and marketing. It is generally wise for anyone with a website to consider pursuing some form of search engine marketing.

Website Flipping

Website flipping - creating websites specifically to sell - has become very popular.

As pointed out on Improve Your Internet Marketing, flipping a web site is not necessarily the same as buying/selling a business.

For one thing, with a business, your main concern is, well, the business. With flipping, everything is done and revolves around the end objective of selling the site.

While it's possible to sell a 'brand new' site, generally speaking you want to get as much traffic and/or revenue as you can before listing it for sale.

Holding the site for even a few months while creating traffic or sales can result in a selling far higher than it might be otherwise.

The Truth about Hype and Internet Marketing

To be successful in Internet marketing, you have to have high-quality advertising. This means you have to present your product in the best light. However there is a difference between putting your best foot forward and hyping your product to the moon. In this article I will discuss how to use hype appropriately to positively help your sales argument. I will show you what to avoid when using hype so you don't get high refunds or tell flat-out lies which can get you in trouble with the law. After reading this article, you should be able to identify what is okay to write your advertisement and what will get you higher sales, and what you should avoid.

In order to sell something, your advertisement has to be believable. Too much hype means very little believability. If people believe your message, they will perceive you as an credible. If they don't, they will think you're con man. Hype doesn't sell products. Learning how to color your product or service and favorable lights, while still being believable, is what sells products.

Hype does have its place in advertising on the Internet, especially in certain markets. Some markets are so saturated that people won't respond to your message, unless you make it outrageous. This doesn't mean you make outrageous claims. This just means you put an interesting spin on your advertising. For example, a one legged golfer who can hit a drive 250 yards is more interesting than a two legged golfer who can hit a drive 300 yards when you're selling a golf instruction video. It's outrageous, and it probably has nothing to do with the product, but it's effective at getting attention. And if your ads don't get attention, they don't get read and you lose sales.

Techniques like these don't work on markets who have been over exposed to them. After awhile, these markets will become immune to tactics that they know are often manufactured to create urgency or interest. Use these wisely, and always know the state of awareness of your marketplace. What works well in one market will fail in another.

Keyword Research - A Secret Trick Most People Don't Know By Michael Ullman

If you're going to enter into any niche, you should start broad, then go narrow. This ensures you won't miss important keywords. For example, let's say you were going to do keyword research for dieting tips. To start broad, we'd want to research a term like diet. We are not looking for just keywords with diet in them however, because search engines like Google also analyze relevancy by latent semantic indexing (LSI). What LSI means is that search engines check for similar terms related to diet to determine how relevant the content website is.To take advantage of LSI properly, do a Google search for diet, but put a tilde (~) in front of the term, so search would look like this: ~diet. Google will return related words in bold such as weight loss, recipes, wheat, meal, eating and foods. Notice the difference from these words and words you'd find in a thesaurus. Affiliate Marketers spend a lot of time and money on Google Adwords, most of it for “GoogleCash” type direct-link affiliate marketing. The money is spent “buying” keywords, hoping that when someone searches on that keyword, they will see their ad, click on it, and purchase whatever is at the other end. Their cost is a direct result of how many keywords they have to buy in order to cover all the possible search terms someone might use when looking for whatever they happen to be selling. But as most PPC affiliate marketer learn, all keywords are not created equally. They tend to follow the “80-20 Rule”: 20% of the keywords account for 80% of the sales. If these advertisers could avoid paying for the low-performing 80%, and buy only the 20% that convert into sales, all of their ad campaigns would be successful. Recently I heard of a program called Affiliate Radar which claims to improve the ROI of pay-per-click advertising. Affiliate Radar is a new program designed to track each keyword individually, enabling the advertiser to see which one's are 'winners', and which are 'losers'.

Keyword Research -- a Secret Trick Most People Don't Know

If you're interested in doing keyword research before entering into a niche or market, then you will want to read this article. Specifically, we will discuss how to do keyword research for free, and the proper way to assure you get the most accurate data so you know which keywords to optimize for. After reading this article, you should have a strategy you can use to start all your keyword research.

If you're going to enter into any niche, you should start broad, then go narrow. This ensures you won't miss important keywords. For example, let's say you were going to do keyword research for dieting tips. To start broad, we'd want to research a term like diet. We are not looking for just keywords with diet in them however, because search engines like Google also analyze relevancy by latent semantic indexing (LSI). What LSI means is that search engines check for similar terms related to diet to determine how relevant the content website is.

To take advantage of LSI properly, do a Google search for diet, but put a tilde (~) in front of the term, so search would look like this: ~diet. Google will return related words in bold such as weight loss, recipes, wheat, meal, eating and foods. Notice the difference from these words and words you'd find in a thesaurus. If you're doing keyword research properly, your best to use terms that search engines tell you are relevant, and not what a thesaurus suggests.

You can then take each of these terms, and do another tilde search, and write down more related words that pop up. By going through broader words into more specific words, you'll be sure not to miss any words related to your keyword, and also have a list of an exact vocabulary to use in your pages to ensure Google will evaluate your content as being highly relevant.

In conclusion, the strategy I have given you something you should use every time you're going to do keyword research for a new niche. While this is not the only strategy you should employ, it is the best one to use for getting a list of terms to look at and consider as traffic sources. The next logical step would be to determine how many users are searching for each of those terms, and then locating ones with high searches so you can optimize for not just the keyword, but related keywords that the search engines also place value upon.
